I will cut straight to the chase: we live in polarised times with misinformation and vitriol shaping much of our political discourse.
Sitting down and discussing topics that are dear to us in a considered and rational manner is not quite the same as it once was. Robust debate seems to have been replaced in many instances by personal attack and smear, causing many people to simply drop out of such discussions completely. This means that their voices are being lost, leaving the political arena in some instances in the control of those who in reality seek to quash debate and instead impose their views.
This is not just something that holds back connection with one another, but also it limits our ability to learn and is in my view detrimental to democracy in our country and beyond.
As a Member of Parliament, every day is different, full of challenges, and deeply interesting. Be it bumping into a constituent at work, visiting a local school, or sitting down with the Prime Minister, each day brings with it a myriad of experiences. But a key part of all of this is understanding how those around me see the world as it is today.
That is exactly what my new Substack series is for, as a space for discussion, for open conversation, and for learning from one another. Each post will include a recording of my thoughts on any given topic, from the hyper-local, to international relations. I welcome you to share your own thoughts in the comments section, or via email if you prefer at paul.davies.mp@parliament.uk. These will inform future discussions, engaging an ongoing, two-way, open conversation.
So, let’s discuss the issues that matter to you.
