“We warmly welcome yesterday’s announcement by the Chancellor of the Exchequer, in Huddersfield, confirming that West Yorkshire will receive a landmark investment to begin construction of the West Yorkshire Mass Transit system by 2028, with the first services expected in the mid-2030s.

We are especially pleased to see that this investment goes beyond mass transit. The transformation of six key transport corridors not covered by the new system —including the development of modern bus stations in Huddersfield, Bradford and Wakefield alongside the West Yorkshire Mayor’s publicly owned bus network— will ensure that no community is left behind.

This is a transformative moment for our region. Fourteen years of Conservative Government’s underinvestment in transport in our regions has resulted in communities across West Yorkshire being held back and locked out of the investments they deserve.

This commitment marks a turning point—bringing real, tangible progress that will connect our towns and cities, unlock economic growth, and improve the daily lives of our constituents.

This is Labour delivering on its promise to invest in every part of Britain. It’s a Plan for Change that puts people first—creating jobs, improving access to opportunity, and building a greener, more connected future for West Yorkshire.

We look forward to working closely with Kirklees Council, West Yorkshire Combined Authority and our communities to ensure this investment delivers the maximum benefit for our area and the wider region.”
