Government action to protect children from abusive parents

I am incredibly pleased to see that the Government has today announced an amendment to the Victims and Courts Bill that seeks to protect mothers and children from society’s most cruel abusers.

This is down to the decades of tireless work of countless survivors of domestic and sexual abuse.

That includes the extraordinary Claire Throssell MBE whose loss of her sons Paul and Jack 11 years ago was avoidable and the pain she has carried is unimaginable.

Huge thanks to Rt Hon Keir Starmer MP, Alexandra Davies-Jones MP, Jess Phillips MP, Sarah Sackman MP, Women’s Aid Federation of England, SHERA, Dr Charlotte Proudman, and my colleagues Dr Marie Tidball MP and Natalie Fleet MP and so many more.

Forced contact with a domestic abuser has never been safe or in the best interests of children.

Finally this nightmare for women is coming to an end.

Ahead of the changes, I hope the judiciary, Cafcass, and everyone involved in the family court system starts to make the shift to better protect women and children who are victims of domestic abuse.
