Standedge Tunnel Visit

Today I had an opportunity to explore the Standedge Tunnel.

There I met Lizzie Dearnly and Sean McGinley of the Canal and River Trust at Standedge Tunnel, Charles works in the visitors’ centre and Stuart Crowther, a volunteer guide on the boat.

As many of us in the area know, the tunnel is the longest, deepest, and highest canal tunnel in Britain! 🚤✨

The highlight was my ride on the Pennine Pride, a charming boat that took me through the tunnel’s fascinating depths. The journey offered stunning views of the tunnel’s intricate brickwork and the tranquil waters of the canal.

Standedge Tunnel is a true marvel of engineering, and the Canal & River Trust has done a fantastic job preserving its beauty and history. The knowledgeable guides shared captivating stories about the tunnel’s construction and its significance in the industrial era. It was incredible to learn about the challenges faced by the workers who built this masterpiece over 200 years ago.

If you’re looking for a unique adventure, I highly recommend visiting Standedge Tunnel and taking a ride on the Pennine Pride. It’s a perfect way to experience a piece of local and British history while enjoying the picturesque scenery of the Pennine countryside. Don’t forget to check out the visitor centre and café for some delightful refreshments after your journey!

I also had an opportunity to meet with the volunteers at the Tunnel End Nature Reserve. It was great to see the work and their dedication to the area.
