Today, I, along with the Prime Minister and the West Yorkshire Mayor, visited Camira Fabrics’ Meltham Manufacturing Facility. This facility is a key player in producing seat cloth for London Underground and London Buses, highlighting the importance of local manufacturing and innovation in supporting public transportation across the UK.
During the visit, the Prime Minister announced a nearly £1.7 billion boost for local buses, roads, and trams in the North this year. This includes an additional £415 million to revitalize key railways across the Pennines, £270 million investment in bus services, and £330 million for road maintenance across the North.

The Prime Minister also expressed his support for regional mayors to accelerate growth plans in their areas through a radical devolution agenda. This includes bringing a new tram network to West Yorkshire, a new station to Merseyside, and an improved transport hub to Bury.
Camira Fabrics has been at the forefront of creating durable, high-quality seat fabrics that enhance passenger comfort and contribute to the aesthetic appeal of London’s iconic transport systems. The Prime Minister’s visit underscores the government’s commitment to supporting local businesses and ensuring the continued success of British manufacturing.

During the visit, we toured the facility, met with dedicated employees, and learned about the advanced processes involved in fabric production. We also discussed the future of sustainable manufacturing and how Camira Fabrics is leading the way with eco-friendly practices. Additionally, we saw the fabric that will be woven into the seats, made in Meltham and dyed at Holmfirth Dyers.
This visit is a testament to the hard work and innovation happening right here in Meltham. Kudos to Camira Fabrics for their outstanding contributions to public transport and for setting a benchmark in the industry!
