According to the Libraries for Primaries campaign, 1 in 7 state primary schools in the UK lacks a dedicated library or reading space. This rises to 1 in 4 schools in the most disadvantaged communities.
As we know, reading for pleasure is essential for a child’s academic success and mental wellbeing. Thousands of primary schools still need libraries.
I asked the Secretary of State if she agreed with me that libraries are vital for child development and what further steps can the government take to ensure every primary school has a library?
Secretary of State, Bridget Phillipson MP in response agreed in the power of reading. Reading has the power to broaden horizons and nurtures creativity. The Secretary of State wants to more children to experiencer that joy.
Under the previous Conservative Government 1 in 4 children were leaving primary school without reaching the expected standard in reading.
Through the Labour Government’s plan for change we will drive high and rising standards to ensure children enjoy reading for pleasure.
