It has been a hugely difficult decision to make, but I know making tough decisions is very much my job as an MP. I am so grateful to everyone who gave their views and especially to those who shared their very personal experiences with me.
After much deliberation and reading the hundreds of correspondences I have received from both sides of the argument, I have decided to support the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill.
This Bill is a testament to our compassion and respect for the dignity of terminally ill individuals.
The Bill incorporates robust safeguards to ensure that the process is safe, transparent, and free from coercion. These measures include thorough assessments by multiple healthcare professionals, mandatory waiting periods, and stringent documentation requirements. Such provisions are designed to protect vulnerable individuals and ensure that the decision to pursue assisted dying is made voluntarily and with full awareness of the consequences.
I understand the concerns about the potential for a slippery slope. However, I believe this Bill is not the beginning of a broader erosion of ethical standards but a carefully considered response to the specific needs of those facing unbearable suffering at the end of their lives. By supporting this Bill, we affirm our commitment to providing compassionate choices for terminally ill adults, ensuring their final days are spent with dignity and peace.
I deeply respect the diverse opinions on this matter and appreciate the heartfelt messages from both supporters and opponents. This decision has not been made lightly, and I remain committed to listening to all perspectives as we move forward.
